VIGRE at the University of Maryland

In 2003, the National Science Foundation awarded Maryland's Mathematics
Department a VIGRE grant.
Its purpose is to
stimulate and implement permanent positive changes in mathematics training.
The Department boasts a
distinguished research faculty and highly acclaimed academic programs
in diverse specialties.
Closely affiliated with the Department and its VIGRE project
is the interdisciplinary AMSC
Graduate Program.
VIGRE at Maryland reshapes and energizes these academic programs.

VIGRE supports research grants for undergraduates and
graduate students,
student travel to professional meetings, and
Postdoctoral Associates.
- Research Interaction Teams for
this semester,
and previous semesters:
Fall 2009,
(Spring 2009,
Fall 2008.
and
Fall 2007)
form the heart of
the University of Maryland VIGRE program.
Each team has a research focus,
and features projects appropriate to each member.
The flexible format

introduces undergraduates to research,
-
hastens the entry of graduate students to research,
- provides postdoctoral associates with a
working community.

To foster the interaction between undergraduate majors
and graduate students, one graduate assistant position has
been designated to supervise the
Undergraduate Math Club.
Undergraduate opportunities include financial support,
as well as academic credit
(as MATH 489)
for
Undergraduate Research Experiences.

NSF funding for VIGRE
provides financial support for participation of students
in conferences and workshops.
As with all NSF VIGRE support, these
funds are only available to US citizens and permanent residents.
However other funds for nonresidents may be available through
the Department.
To apply for a travel grant, email Dr. Laskowski
three weeks before the proposed travel.
Email a list of estimated estimated
expenses, the dates of the travel and the title of the activity.
Indicate any other possible sources of support and have your adviser
email a brief justification of the trip.
